Add a resource (PDF, external website, video, embedding)

  • While creating/editing an exam, you can add websites or PDFs as student resources. Access this feature in the exam configurations found in step 3.

External resources (via URL) - website, cloud files, video

The external recources tool allows you to grant students access to certain websites, files, or videos without them having to leave the high-security mode.

However, please note that not all websites can be embedded. Always enter the exam as a student before conducting it to make sure the resource works.

More information and troubleshooting guides can be found further down in this article.

    To add an external resource:

    1. Add the address in the URL: field
    2. and give it a name

Enter the exam as a student beforehand

To make sure the embedding works properly, we strongly advise testing the exam by entering as a student using the same method students will use when entering the exam rather than relying on the preview function.

If a website can't be embedded, it won't be visible within exams. Websites can either allow or block embedding.

If a website blocks embedding, there is no way to make it work.

Also, please note that students can follow links in an external resource.

    Activate the high-security mode

To add an external resource to an exam, you must either activate the high-security mode or disable the cheat protection completely, since the cheat prevention function in the browser mode locks the exam when it detects focus on another website.

Link to a file saved in a cloud service (i.e. Google Drive or OneDrive)

In some cases, linking to a file on a cloud service can work, but most times you will have to make sure the access is set to Public. However, we can't guarantee this will work since not all websites allow this and this can vary depending on the website.

Also, remember to test the resources before conducting the exam by entering the exam as a student to make sure that they work as expected.

Add a resource using an embedding link (for example Youtube)

Sometimes, you are required to use an embedding link to make the external resource work.

For Youtube videos, you must use the embed function to add a Youtube video to your exam.

To do this, follow the instructions below:

    1. Go to the video on Youtube
    2. Click Share

    3. Copy the embed link.
It should look like this: https://www.youtube.com/embed/0Rn5UHvLRZ4

    4. Paste the link in the URL field in the External resource tool.

For the student, the video will show in the menu to the left. It can look something like this:

    FAQ and troubleshooting

Can I link to the video from inside a question?

Answer: No. You can only add videos via the External Resource tool, but you can choose a new name for the video when adding it as a resource, which can help if you want to refer to the video in a question.

The external resource doesn't work - how do I fix it?

Answer: If you encounter difficulties when trying to embed specific websites, it's probable that they either disallow embedding or there's an issue with the link you've provided. Websites may opt not to show the content (resulting in a blank page like in the picture below) or deactivate certain features (like search functionality). If this situation arises we are unable to provide any assistance.

    Special embedding links

Some services, such as Youtube, Microsoft Forms, etc. have special links for embedding. You can read more about this further up on this page.
